Total bounce rate

Total bounced

Hard bounce rate
0.60%
Soft bounce rate
0.40%

This rate is below your selected review threshold.

The threshold is your own review trigger, not a universal provider rule. Use mutually exclusive counts from one reporting period. A temporarily deferred message may later deliver.

How to use the email bounce rate calculator

Measure the share of attempted campaign messages that bounced. Keep hard and soft bounce counts separate, choose your own review threshold, and compare results within one reporting period.

  1. Enter the number of attempted messages from your campaign report.
  2. Enter hard bounced and soft bounced messages using mutually exclusive counts. Do not count several retry events as several recipients.
  3. Choose a review threshold appropriate to your provider and sending history.
  4. Inspect total, hard, and soft bounce rates. A result at or above the selected threshold receives a review prompt.
  5. Read the actual bounce reasons and update your audience or infrastructure before another send. Reconcile messages that were temporarily deferred and later delivered.

Hard and soft bounces mean different things

A hard bounce usually represents a permanent delivery failure such as an invalid mailbox, while a soft bounce or deferral may represent a temporary issue. Providers classify events differently, so confirm the definitions in your reports. Suppress addresses when the provider requires it and use bounded retries for temporary failures. Do not treat every retry event as a new attempted message.

Choose a meaningful denominator

The calculator divides total bounced messages by attempted messages. Use counts from the same campaign and reporting snapshot, with each message counted once. Some dashboards use different denominators or merge temporary and final outcomes. Differences in definitions can make two rates look inconsistent even when they describe the same traffic. Record your reporting method before comparing providers or periods.

A review threshold is not a delivery guarantee

The threshold is an editable internal review trigger, not a universal rule enforced by all mailbox providers. Even a low bounce rate does not prove recipient consent, authentication, or inbox placement. Investigate a sudden increase, inspect failure codes, and segment issues by recipient domain and signup source. Read the deliverability guide for the wider relationship between list quality, reputation, and feedback.

Common questions

Can bounces exceed attempted messages?

Not with these definitions. The calculator rejects overlapping or inconsistent counts.

Should a deferred message be counted forever?

Use a consistent reporting snapshot and reconcile messages that later deliver according to your provider definitions.

Is the default threshold a provider limit?

No. It is a starting review setting that you should adjust to your own policy and provider guidance.
